Introduction
Early 6x15 Fuchs wheels are known as "Deep six Fuchs" while later versions of this wheel are known as "Flat six Fuchs". There are a few differences between the deep and flat versions, but the main reason is that area of the wheel that has the five cut outs sits farther away from the rim in the deep versions than the flat versions.
History
Deep six Fuchs were manufactured from 1969 to early 1971. Flat six Fuchs started to show up on mid to late 1971 model year 911s and continued thru the mid 1970's
Identifying a deep six Fuchs wheel
Depth of cut out from rim
The classic Fuchs five spoke design contains the five cut outs that create the spokes. These cut outs reside in a flat plane that is offset from the outside of the wheel. With the deep version, this plane is about 2 inch below the rim of the wheel. With the flat version, this plane is about 1 inch below the rim of the wheel.
Shape of cut out near valve stem hole
While this is not an absolute, many of the deep six wheel had a more heart shaped cut out near the valve stem hole. This shape allowed for more metal to surround the valve stem hole. Some deep six wheels do not have this heart shaped cut out. It is not clear if this is due to production changes or that some wheels have had the extra metal around the valve stem hole removed or a combination of the two.
Lack of tire bead
The deep six version was designed to be used with a tubed tire. So the rim lacks a bead for the tire. Flat six versions have bead for tubeless tires.
Part number
The deep six version is prefixed with a 901 number while the flat six verison is prefixed with a 911 number.
