Using a borrowed motor...

So my motor went pop due to a bad load of gas and a weak piston. While I wait for Jake Raby to prep the new 2316 for build a friend has offered a motor to use until that is done. It probably doesn't have the torque or HP of my 2270 but it does have some pedigree...

Dwight Mitchell had a shop in Sacramento in the 70's through 90's until he retired called Autosport. This is a Dwight Mitchell blueprinted BP(?) motor. He has had it for a few years and starts it on a stand from time to time while he preps the 914 it is going into. We will be putting it in on Sunday... I guess the engine runs on stock dJet so it must be a 2056 with a bit of a cam bump and some compression. I have seen one of these motors in action and they can be very potent. (though the one I saw was being abused and ultimately blew up).

Dwight, as I understand it was the only factory supported Porsche autocross effort ever... One of his cars autocrosses in the Santa Rosa area and it is so clean and well prepared... Still screams too...

Thanks Glenn, The guy who is lending the motor (his motivation is he gets to drive a prepared car with his motor in it to see how it feels) used to work for Dwight and has his number in his speed dial. My understanding is Dwight and his wife moved to Florida a few years back but they are still Sacramento Valley PCA members and come back from time to time. When they do, it is an event announced in the Drifter and on the SVR website.

Well, the motor is in. It runs very - very smooth. I guess it was built to PCA B-Production rules. It has a header that I think is called a Triad...
By the way Glenn, Jim says he lost Dwight's number. He has his address and stuff but no phone... Maybe you could PM it to me?

B-prod from the mid-1990s was a relatively mild motor. Stock cam, D-jet, half-point compression up from stock (so 8.1:1), light flywheel, headers. That was about it. I think you could go up to 95mm on the pistons (0.040" overbore from stock) but not to 96mm.

Dave, That is what I have gathered. A mildish motor. My guess is that the Mitchell benefit will be his attention to detail in the blueprinting.

It was offered as a loaner by a friend and neighbor who comes to the Family Reunion events and is a 914World member. He used to work for Dwight at Autosport before getting in to computers.

There was a group of "BP-lite" cars as well. Those were cars that had less-modified suspensions than the Production-class rules allowed, but had light flywheels and headers, and were generally more street-oriented cars than the really serious BP cars. (E.g., Rick's silver 75 with the Rubber Baby Buggy Bumpers.) A couple of them got together at one point and tried to set up a class under the "roll your own class" rules, but I don't remember if they actually had enough people show up regularly enough to make it happen.

Those were good times.

This engine came from a Monterey area car. Apparently two cars had gone to get teched for a track day event and on the way back, they stopped to aid a stranded motorist. Another car came along and totalled both of their 914's.
