porsche typical practice was to use protype cars for first 10 cars ( 001 thru 0010) for engineering/ development cars. porsche used production (1969) serial numbering on 914-6 cars and 930 turbo cars ( 1975) starting with 0011as factory pre production/smog test cars and continuing the numbering series from there. detailed information on serial # on 930 can be found in exelence article nov 2009 issue
I saw that article as well.
As further proof, when I called PCNA years ago to find more information on #12 they told me the lowest VIN they had was #11. I believe it was Howard Adams that I was talking with.

In the February 1992 issue of Panorama magazine there was an article about buying a 914. In the article, figure 2 displayed the 914 model identification chart which included starting and ending VIN numbers. It showed 914-6 VIN's began with 0001 for each year of production.
In the June 1995 issue of Panorama magazine they have another article on 914s. In this article, figure 1 displayed the same 914 model identification chart but this time they show the 914-6 VIN's beginning with 0011 for each year of production.
I think they might have started with 0001 for Homoligation of the 914/6, they figured they made at least 10 prototypes so might as well count them.

Tony... when is the article? Have you taken her out for a shake-down cruise?

sometimes the factory renumbers previous racing cars to develop their racing programs as well.I own a factory ST RSR prototype which was orginally a 72S 911 230 0789 which was a factory race car that was crashed and then renumbered to 911 360 0001 used to develop the RSR,all confirmed by the factory and the production number on the dash.
I was wondering if we know the karmann chassis numbers for these early 914 prototype cars.Anyone know the karmann numbers on existing cars?I am assuming that the karmann numbers were there to track their internal production?is that correct,i am assuming all chassis had karmann numbers???confused.

my car 914.043.0012 Does not have a Karmann number or a Karmann badge, however it does have a "11" stamped just above the VIN (http://www.roadglue.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1981&postcount=22) and in the door frame (http://www.roadglue.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1982&postcount=23)

the Karmann body number of #0011 is strictly in line with the other 916s (very late 1971)
Porsche renumberd the VIN of some cars, but not the Karmann number ...
I agree Wolfgang
The Karmann numbers are all sequential (except 19)
It is also important to note that contrary to George Hussey's assessment (that these were irregular 914/4 chassis) the sequential follows the end of production 1971 914/6s "131" not the number format of the 914/4 chassis
VIN - Karmann No.
914.233.0019 - 1310412
914.233.0011 - 1310433
914.233.0014 - 1310434
914.233.0016 - 1310435
914.233.0017 - 1310436
914.233.0012 - 1310437
914.233.0015 - 1310438
914.233.0020 - 1310439
914.233.0013 - 1310440
914.233.0018 - 1310441
example:
VIN 914.143.0396 has Karmann number 1310396
I find it interesting that harry's GT imported by VW canada is number 8
Raj
Karmann #130008 is the lowest I have recorded

I am of the opinion that the 916 (914 233 0019), the production number. 1310442 and not 1310412.
Please check your statements.
Thank you.
914 143 0195 = 916-(Brutus)-prototype, production number 1310083
