will not be able to get underneath the car till weekend...maybe not even then, so would like to know how to tell the difference between a right side and left side flapper box.
while changing my oil last weekend I noticed my passenger (right side) flapper box was like brand new. The driver's side however has seen better days...still functional but if I could get a replacement, why not.
...I just would like to know how to know the difference...tube bends, cable attachments...etc...
Pictures are always a help.
Thanks,
Ray

Hi Ray,
Yes - the right and left side flapper boxes are different - mainly due to the orientation of the actuator levers. I believe Dansk still makes replacements that are available (sold by Pelican and probably others..??). In replacing either side, I'd suggest getting a new barrel nut(s), clamps and heater hose - as the hoses tend to disintegrate over time (not that 914s are "old", BTW ;) ) You might also check the condition of the grommets, as the cable cuts into those after a while - making for a "sticky" lever movement...
HTH - and I've been known to be wrong before with giving Technical advice on 914s :) :)

For those of you keeping score, John is correct. ;)
The Heat Control Boxes (Flapper box) are different for each side.
The part numbers are:
022 256 205 B (left)
022 256 206 B (right)
Diagrams and parts list here (http://partpricer.com/202-15.html)
Pelican lists the Dansk items as available

Ray,
If it's working, and you're not going to concours the car, why not save some money & just clean up the joint & linkage - and leave it alone? They can look ugly from the outside but still be perfectly functional. The linkage is the key part. They can also be relatively easily restored physically.
Howver, if you WANT new, try EBay & be patient. Over a period of a month I scored a L & R new valve for a total of less then $75. I don't need them, but am a sucker for spares.
Bottom line - if it's working (the ugly one) clean up the linkage & cable & leave it alone. Use the money somewhere else on the 914. Plenty of places for that!

hey Pat....I agree with you about if it works, don't break it!
It's funny, I sold a couple parts from my last 914 and the moneys sitting in my paypal account burning a hole in my pocket. My '73 is not really needing much at this point, but I'm also always on the search for spare parts. When I noticed the condition of the flapper I just figured I'd try to find one surfing all the usual places. I found one on Samba.com; called the guy and for $15 he sent me one in fair condition. I'm actually just trying to be sure it's the "right part" or the driver's side flapper.
...so I figure I could clean up the spare and maybe come Spring make the switch.
Until then, I just enjoy surfing ebay, samba, Pelican...or wherever I could find those excellant buys on FI, seals or other parts to keep my 914 going as long as I can.

I'm with you! Love finding bargains on EBay ( & they're there if you're patient). Really don't NEED anything, just stocking up for the next teener.
Amazing thing about the flappers is that they are usually ultra expensive or ultra cheap. Sometime you have to buy them with other parts too, but may be worth it. Bought a flapper on EBay last month (new) for $45, with shipping. Bought another a week later for $15 - go figure. I've sen pairs advertised (new) for $145 min bid & that's just plain uncalled for.
It IS fun to hunt, though.
