View Full Version : Lower Engine Air Deflectors on a 6 - Collective Wisdom?

As you guys know... I'm building my car off a 74 tub. That said, it had a very nice pair (almost mint) of air deflectors at the back of the pan.

I removed them for painting thinking they wouldn't go back on but, found them in a disassembly box and began to think. It is my understanding that there was a significant difference in engine cooling with these in place.

Engine cooling is never a bad thing so I'm 60:40 right now on bolting them back on. I've never seen any of these in this good of shape. No scrapes, scuffs or cracks.

Thoughts as to why or why not? I would think that if the factory made the 6's into this late a date they would have had these.

You're probably right that if the 6's kept being produced they would have had them too...maybe the only reason to leave off is that the 6's did not have them...I always left them on the 4's I had since I figured the factory boys had better data than me...you know some cars mainly older GM had a similar vane under the front radiator

Oh wait. You were asking people with wisdom. Please disregard the previous post and pardon the interuption. :)

LOL... thanks guys.

They're supposed to create a low pressure area under the engine allowing more cooling air to come through the engine grill.

Sounds like a good idea.

I agree, they should create a low pressure area...put them on!

They are on. That one bolt in the nook behind the right handbrake cable tube was fun! :D

Thanks guys.

If you didn't have anything else to do I would say...
Put them on. Go on a long drive and record the oil and ambient temps.
Take them off. Go on a long drive and record the oil and ambient temps.
I'd love to know the difference. With a front cooler, it might be impossible to tell. Let us know!

Have you guys seen this analysis of the 914 aerodynamics and engine bay airflow? He doesn't mention the flaps. I would love to see the difference.

cheers,
