Glenn, do you know the original color of the chassis?
Was it this car ?
edit
VIN 914.043.0663
Today Ralph told me that this was # 18
And yours was built up complete and ran as it was /is.
You probably already know this , I posted the green car pic, and it is 0663
(he said he may have more pics also.)

This newest car is awesome! I think you really came across a great find. Looks ready to race.
Glenn, do you know the original color of the chassis?
Was it this car ?
I talked to Ralph and he said that he was sold a 6 (VIN 914.043.0663?) which Stephen Behr raced at Watkins Glen in 1970, It was Orange at the time. He said he was able to get a Carrera 6 engine and GT bumpers and hood and deck lid for it. The flares arrived a couple days before the race so they were not put on the car.
Meaney then bought 914.043.0691 from Max Moritz in January 1971. The orange car was painted Conda Green and both cars were raced at 24 Hrs of Daytona and Sebring (1971). At Sebring the formally orange car was crashed. Ralph received a blue 914/4 from VW-Porsche, it was a factory demo car with a blown engine. This car was converted to a 6, painted Conda Green and then raced mostly in SCCA. Ralph said all the parts were taken from the crashed car and put on the blue 914/4.
I am waiting for Ralph to confirm the VIN but this car sounds like it is the 914/4, it is blue underneath the white paint and came with front and rear GT lids, oil cooler and steering wheel also has a correct Scheel seat. I also have the chain of ownership on this car back to Ralph.
I believe Patrick Scalli still has the second car (VIN 914.043.0663?) where all the GT parts on this car came from.
The picture looks like the second car which was turned into a roadster or it is a replica???
here is the rear GT lid, it still has orange and conda green paint were the white is peeling.
Here is the front GT lid it still has orange and conda green paint
here are some interior pix
Here is the front of the car, note the Behr oilcooler.
Ray said he recently sold the original GT 100 L fuel tank.
here are the IMSA tech stickers from the races from 1984-1987
The car has 935 front struts and came with an extra pair
The picture looks like the second car which was turned into a roadster or it is a replica???
That is a period photo so it should be the car.
here is the VIN, the chassis stamp in the trunk is in the center.
I will need to remove paint to be able to read it.
That is a period photo so it should be the car.
That car has a bar that comes from the center of the roll hoop forward, it would be the first 6 that Meaney raced. What year was the photo taken?
What kind of coating can we give those stickers so they can be preserved there on the cage forever!
So, I'm guessing you'll be going back to Conda Green?
So awesome:)
cheers,
dug

I am not sure what to do???

The car will stay silver and be raced I am shooting for a race the 3rd week in October.
Some other goodies I got with the car
- Patches
- IMSA Rule Books
- Stickers
Here is the Scheel GT seat that came in the car
here are the Koni double adjustable rear shocks.
it is interesting that he used a rear sway bar

The front suspension
935 struts
backside of the oil cooler from the bottom
This car has no Karmann badge or hole for it, just like #12
Karmann Number is 38 1 95 07
9/15/1969 if I counted correctly
original color appears to be Adriatic Blue
I found some Conda Green under the weather strip trim on the passenger side
The 100 L fuel tank support was inverted for use with a later ATL fuel cell

Glenn, I believe those are also 74' RSR coil-over struts. Same thing, excellent find!

yes Tony purchased the tank from Ray
Here the ad from July 1983, I don't believe the part about it being the 1971 Daytona / Sebring car is correct.
Speaking to Ralph it is probably the car they made from the wrecked car at Sebring
Ray said:
"That's definitely the car. I put the engine and gearbox in my 914-6."
I am running new oil and fuel lines on the car so I pulled out the GT oil cooler
T.C. I no longer lust after your oil cooler :D
But I lust after YOUR cooler Glenn:)
Karmann Number is 38 1 95 07
9/15/1969 if I counted correctly
Are you sure that isn't 9/14? :)
Either way it is your cars 40th birthday this weekend!
Happy 9/14!

Some questions about the date code
xxy95zz
xx = week of year - starting at 0 or 1?
y = day of week - starting at 0 or 1?
Actually, by my count there are 243 days to the end of August.
Using 0 based numbering 38 x 7 = 266 days
This would be Sept 24 (266-243 + 1 for day 1)
If the first week is marked as week 1, then it is day 266-7 = 259.
This would be Sept 16 (259-243)
Still, either way your car is turning 40 years old this week.
What are you gonna get it?
cheers,
dug

IMSA had stickers for each safety switch
cut-off and fire suppression
Home made engine grill with enlarged intake
Glenn, I believe those are also 74' RSR coil-over struts. Same thing, excellent find!
The extra pair of struts might be RSR the pair on the car are 935
22 gallon ATL fuel cell, the bladder and foam are still in good shape but I will replace before racing
early 914s had seamless cowls like this
Glenn in Ralph's photo alblum he has a pic of the bare blue tub.

Jeff
could you go over to Ralph's and scan that for me?
While you are at it could you get the invoice he has for the car?
no problem.
I am sending my son with some heads tomorrow, I can go there myself next week.
no problem.

Jeff you are awesome!

Trying to get the car ready for a race on Saturday
Here are some pictures of the master cylinder
have a 2.2L E that I will throw in the car for the race, resealing before installation
First project was to put some proper brakes on the front.
I had a set of 944 Turbo calipers laying around so I had Mark Kinnaman change the bolt spacing. First he made some aluminum plugs then center the calipers for a 3.5" bolt spacing.
The 944 brakes had a 3.7" spacing
here is the finished caliper mounted on the 935 strut
I also noticed that the car does not have a center vent on the dash.

I am putting a 2.2 L E motor in it.
Car is going to race on Saturday at Blackhawk Farm
started working on the suspension , replacing bearings.
The rear hubs are strange, they look like they were made from blanks.
They have the 914/6 stub axle spline pattern.
My 12 gallon fuel bladder arrived today!
Awesome progress! Are you gonna make it?

Mark Kinnaman and I finished up the car at 3am on Saturday morning, it was 40 degrees and raining but we still had to take her for a test run.
I brought the car out to Blackhawk Farm Raceway to get the technical inspection (which it passed) so I could be issued a logbook.

Thanks again for all your help Mark Kinnaman and Tim Green!

It was a lot of fun finishing up the car. We worked pretty late (3AM). Glenn let me take the first run around the block (O.K. I really stole it!). Out of the box it ran great. 3AM, 40 degrees, no headlights and raining! I am so glad you know who wasn't watching.

Sorry you will have to wait until next Spring :D
I will post some pictures of the work we did, I really didn't have time during the build.
Awesome work getting it done Glenn and friends! Good work getting passed through tech. Bummer that you didn't make it to quali. You'll be ready to go when spring comes now at least!

exactly!
I will probably make some modifications to the seat I don't like how the side bolster rub my armpits.
new crankfire ignition came in today!
Yeah, I didn't like the same thing when I got a similar seat with my spec-miata. The comfort level increased dramatically when I swapped it out for a Momo FIA approved fiberglass seat. You will likely be required to have a rigid back brace or direct contact with the roll cage with that seat. Check your rule book.

My race car had a Kirkey seat almost identical to yours. The side bolsters made it impossible for me to get in and out of the car. To make things worse, the PO had installed side helmet supports.
He must have had similar armpit issues because he had modified his side bolsters as well.
I replaced it with a Kirkey Intermediate road racing seat, and the fit is awesome.

Congratulations Glenn. :)
As T. C. mentioned my wheels are set back too far in the fenders in back so I decided to put the 100 mm wheel studs in. Only 1 problem, I had to remove the 72 mm studs first. I made a tool to press the studs out on the hub. the first version bent so I welded more steel plate on it and bingo they pushed right out.
It isn't pretty but it worked!
Now I have the 100 mm studs in! I have some larger spacers and the fenders should look full in the back now.

That's what were talking about
Now those are some studs!
the 7 x 15 Cookie Cutters arrived today!
Tires due in on Wednesday, race on Sunday
I picked up some Hoosier R6s and mounted them, these should fill the fenders a little better.
I picked up a snap-off removable steering wheel hub, it do not fit Momo's hubs or steering wheels. Lucky for me Mark Kinnaman is an awesome machinist and was able to re-drill the Momo pattern in this hub.
I have a Markshifter the finest shifter I have ever felt on a 914, Kinnaman also made bronze bushings for the rear
due to the addition of my new Kirkey seat I needed a new method of mounting the belts. Mark Kinnaman made this nice mounting bar for me!

Glenn,
I am not sure that they have approached you yet, but some of my Midwest Z car friends hope you will keep coming out. They knew exactly which car you were. They even told me you had to add a 1 to your number as another Z car already had 89 reserved. Say hi to Phil Reith for me when you meet him. There are parts on his Z that came from me years ago...

I sold him my swaybars. The front swaybar looks "bigger than some I have seen on big-assed trucks" according to my brother who is a welder and works on diesels. Phil Reith says your car sounds tame. I guess I should go back through this thread and see what you are running for an engine.
The other 914, the yellow one "dogged one of the Z cars all day, he stayed ahead of him, but at the end of the day he was exhausted and hated 914's with a passion."

I am running an old 2.2 E motor with a sport muffler, it is a trainer motor.
That yellow 914 driver must be something because that car looks stock and he was running with the big boys.

Fantastic! Sounds (and now looks) like a great product from what I've heard from Glenn. Good luck on its release.
