Couple of questions:
Main question; If I recall from my six, the shock tower black looked like it was applied in a fairly crude manner. I swear it looked like it was brushed on. Any thoughts on how it was applied? Brush? Flat or Semi? Again, from my previous car I'm almost thinking flat with a brush...
Secondary; Any thoughts on why? Was this an indicator for the line workers that this was to be a 914-6?
Oooops... another one; was the same method used under the small secondary engine grills on the body?
Here is a great pic of armandos car.

I have seen this it looks more like tar to seal the opening around the top strut mount. examples...

This might have been done at Porsche where the 6s were assembled as opposed to Karmann where 4s were assembles

The paint in that location as well as in the interior where the body color was not covered by black trim

Glenn,
Underneath the small grills on either side of the engine lid; black, no?

Black under the grills. I have pics from an original paint 70 at the shop.

Thanks guys.
I think I've got what I need. Armando's pic looks to be exactly what I remember on my car. You can see where the factory applied the paint and the strut adjustment was made later.
Mark, can you post? Also: Your fronts finally made it here Friday. They're going back out tomorrow.

Yup, as well as in the interior

I think the alignment was initially done then the goo appiled.
based on the cars I have seen

Agree... From Glenn's first post it looks like that car had something applied a second time. Andy posted a picture of some "really" heavy gunk as well... something I've never seen.
Still puzzled as to why 6's and not fours.
Glenn, what areas in the interior needed to be covered? Back window tray? Seat crossbars?
Here is a picture of the side engine grills, it is also painted black on the bump stop bracket
here is a picture of the cabin of an unrestored 6
here is the shock mount area

Still vacillating.
#1 - Do I paint the shock towers now and then put on all of the freshly plated plates and fasteners?
#2 - Do I mount the bushings and plates and then paint it black (knowing that an alignment will necessitate a touch-up)?
#3 - Do I mount the bushings and plates, leave it, get an alignment and then paint it black?
(anal retentive) Decisions, (anal retentive) Decisions, (anal retentive) Decisions...
paint the majority, get an alignment , then glob it all over the final setting of the hardware.

Sounds like a sound plan. I think I'll paint and install the front end this weekend.

Flat Black Enamel and a coarse hair 1" brush.
I laid it on thick and used 2 coats.
Dried up nicely and is pretty much spot on to what I remember on my six.
