View Full Version : Front Fuel Pump Wiring Thoughts

Hi Gang,

I wrapped my front harness and "then" thought about the fuel pump. I'm imagining that this wiring should have been included in that loom.

Has anyone BTDT?

Where do the stock fuel pump wires originate (relay board)?

I guess I can get the colors off the schematic I have here but, what I'm looking for is; the length of the new wires and where they should run.

Anyone know a lot more about wiring than I do?

The fuel pump relay is on the board in the engine compartment.

The fuel pump + wire is black with a red stripe, it is connection #13 on the 14 pin connector on the relay board, it can be grounded in the front trunk.

I just looked at the 1975 wire diagram and it looks like the relay was NOT relocated so run a wire thru the main harness in the cabin to the front bulkhead... 8 ft long wire should do the trick.

Danke,

I have an internally regulated alternator on the 2.5 so, no board moving forward. Will this matter? (told ya I was stupider about this stuff) :D

How do you want the pump controlled? On the four-cylinder cars, the fuel injection tells the pump when to run. It uses either the fuel pump relay on the relay board (the D-jet cars) or the dual relay hanging off the battery (the L-jet cars) to do that. The wire up to the pump is run from the "output" of that relay.

Yours is a Six, right? I'm not sure how the original Sixes controlled the pump. It would be easy enough to set up a relay in the front trunk (or under the tank) that is turned on and off by "switched power" that you can get from the fuse panel, or probably from some source up front.

Be sure to document and diagram what you do. If you don't, you'll hate yourself later on when you're trying to troubleshoot other seemingly-unrelated problems...

I agree, you are running Webers or PMOs right?
There is a chance the fuel pump runs a set amount of time, I would have to check.
You could cut a relay mount off of a spare headlight motor harness. I probably have one if you need it.

Good Point Dave

Funny... exactly what I was thinking when I was reading through Daves post. Depending upon space, it could be mounted under the grey relay/armature cover on that side. Might be slick (might not with my mechanical abilities) :D

I'm running Webers. I believe these pumps run continuously with a return line back to the fuel tank. No?

Thanks Dave. Thanks Glenn. I PM'd Jeff and asked if he had 8' of Black and Red he could sell. I may need that plug. I'll keep you posted.

E.

P.S. Dave, the car is a 74 conversion car.

Perry Kiehl will have that wire (I sold him 500' of it) 914 Perry (http://www.roadglue.com/forum/member.php?u=6)
Let me know if you can't find the fuel pump plug

Checking... I called direct and they wanted a $750 opening order and $125 orders moving forward. That would probably be about 250 pieces to start. Anyone up for a group buy? LOL. They recommended a distributor and they sell them for $9.58 each.

Can't seem to call up a GI Joe's web presence. I see they're a NW type chain. I'll try to get in touch with someone there.

Looks like GI Joe's closed their doors... probably for selling switches too low!
