In search of a clean original 914/6. Considering this one despite misgivings:
http://www.vintagemotorssarasota.com/Car_pages/Porsche/70porsche/70porsche914.htm
Aside from the door panels and steering wheel, it looks pretty good (albeit for less than the $33,500 asking) but need more info on the engine mods. Still unclear if the case is original.
From following the posts about Auto Atlanta on other forums, I'm not sure I should even look at the two they have that aren't huge $$$. Anyone familiar with their current offerings?
I'm a ready buyer with appropriate funds for the right car. It's not my first rodeo as I have a 356 as well as an early 911, but this will be my 1st 914.
Thanks!

Hi Russel,
The front and rear valances are not original and I think the fog lights are from a later 914-4, but these parts are replaceable if this matters to you. Otherwise, 914-6 appears from the photos to be a worthwhile six to consider. I have seen many in worse condition for sale and at least there isn't any obvious evidence of damage being covered up. Where the prices for these cars will go is anyone's guess but the asking price on this one is not outrageous. Good luck in your search.

The non-original rear bumper and taillight lenses make me wonder if it hasn't been hit in the rear.
The correct rear bumper and taillight lenses are pretty spendy parts. At least, for perfect lenses they sure are!

I have one, 2.0 "S" spec engine with original case per the COA. PM me for particulars.

This 914-6 looks like a half decent car for the money.
I noticed the sticker on top of the fan housing is facing the wrong way for a 914-6. It’s facing the 911 direction so maybe it’s not the original engine to the car. The spare wheel in the front trunk doesn't match the other wheels on the car. It has aftermarket air cleaners and an aftermarket coil to go with the unit in the trunk.
I own a 1971 914-6 that has a rare 1970 rear bumper on it. This car is a 1970 914-6 with a 1971-73 rear bumper. I would be willing to make an even trade if you get the car. I also have some nice original 1970 914-6 perlon type carpet that this car could use.
By the way, there is no difference between the 1970-74 914-4 front US fog lights and the ones used in a US 1970-71 914-6. So the fog lights on this 6 are correct.
I'm up in Tampa so we aren’t too far away from each other.

MikeZ... PM sent.
Steve, from what I've been told the engine was built by a 911 guy, supposedly on the original 2.0 case; no verification as yet. With the exception of the valance and rear bumper what's non-original is pretty obvious and doesn't bother me. If it's had rear damage they aren't disclosing it. The story is the car is from a collector in the Shenedoah PCA chapter... but I hate stories without cookies and milk.
There's much to like so I'll go see it. Love tangerine, and the interior bits can be corrected. But I'm patient, if it's not right the search continues. If I do buy it I'll certainly contact you on the bumper swap. Easy drive from Sarasota... :)
Thanks!

The 914-6 and early 914-4 driving lights, with the Tungsden bulbs, had lenses with a horizontal "line" in the bottom half while the later (until 1975) round driving lights did not. The European fog lights had H3 halogen bulbs.

There's been some discussion on the Early 911 board about this car:
http://www.theaircooledguys.com/1971-porsche-914-6/
It was also posted on the 356 Registry site, the only thing not mentioned is the price. Hope to get a call back today regarding that... does anyone here know the car or the seller Cameron Ingram at Road Scholars?
I appreciate all the input, many thanks.

Russ,
this 914-6 is for sale for quite a long time.
It was advertised on lots of webpages
the asking price was around 40k US$
IIRC there was a long discussion on 914World about this car and we discovered lots of non-original stuff
don't get me wrong - this car seems to be in brilliant condition, a superb restoration ... but if I would spend 40k for a 914-6 I would want a most original car
according to the eBay description it's an all matching numbers car (VIN, engine + tranny)
eBay auctions:
Nov 2008 - US $33,500.00 (BuyItNow)
Oct 2008 - US $31,760.00 (Reserve not met)
Sep 2008 - US $29,100.00 (Reserve not met) - BuyItNow price: US $39,000.00
hope that helps

Thanks Gustl, following past threads about this car as well as speaking with the current seller today still keeps it on my list of possible candidates.
Somewhat pricey at $45K, but considering the restoration and recent expenses probably justified. It would be hard to restore another for less money. But I agree with you that a good, unmolested/unrestored original is more compelling at a similar price. Finding a car like that takes time and patience, which I have.

I've driven this car and it does haul the mail. The engine is "larger" by a good margin over 2.0. It was professionally built by a Grand Am race team owner who knows how to make them scream.
The last time I saw it the trunk appeared to have a slightly caved in area where someone may have sat on it.
The rockers are not original (fiberglass). I think $33K is a real stretch as I can best describe it as a 20 footer. The short tires give it "holeshot" gearing and the way it revs you need to be ready to row the shifter fast.

I know that car well, and it was on my short list a little over a year ago when it was being sold by a dealer in NYC, asking price $39.5k. It then went to Canillo Motorsports (think that was it) and the price eventually came down to $36.5k. Since it's now being offered elsewhere, I would guess it sold at that price or less. Hopefully that puts things in perspective ~ at $45k I would walk away and never look back - it is a pretty car but you can have your pick of the litter at that price point, especially in light of the current economic environment, and that car leaves a fair bit to be desired in terms of originality (as Gustl mentioned).
I wish you luck in your hunt, I looked for a over a year before finding the car for me. It can be frustrating because these cars don't come up for sale too-too often and when they do the nice ones are in high demand. My suggestion to you would be, be proactive in finding a car. I did a lot of sleuthing and did lots of "any interest in selling your car?" instead of just waiting for one to come up for sale. I did find probably a dozen cars this way that were never on the market. To me, that was part of the fun. :)

My 914/6 search will be postponed as the other addition I was searching for has been successful: a clean '67 911S. :D
It definately pays to be patient and resourceful. My budget is blown for now, but I'll keep looking for the right 914 while I replenish the coffers.
Thanks to everyone for your guidance, opinions, and honesty.
Cheers!

Wouldn't an early 911S be considered off-topic here? :D
Found on eBay, from a BMW guy I am familiar with. An honest numbers matching original car (except paint & SR) perfectly suited to my tastes. Nice group of factory options, the roof was added which is a plus as far as I'm concerned. Usefulness works over slavish originality IMHO. The black paint is about 15 years old and looks very nice, but ultimately I'll take it back to Slate Gray. After searching for so long and missing a couple, this is the perfect keeper for me. I hope to have a long relationship with it.
