Thanks for sharing Buddy :)
Looks very nice!

Interesting!

I have heard of folks welding or filling the windshield to cowl seal and the flexing of the car causes this area to crack or the filler to come out. I wonder if this reinforcement prevent this kind of failure. It does seem to be a weak area. All 914's could benefit from this.

Thanks for sharing. :)

We did this on Mike Ginter's tub when it was at Troy's shop. I'm not sure how much it would affect the "confluence" but, it addresses a very weak windshield frame in general.

You can "very" easily move the windshield frame around in a stock car. Measurements across the top opening can vary dramatically from car to car.

One of the things I think they addressed with the later "V" type roll bars that were added is the side bar heading to that a-pillar. I think that would help the confluence area.

I'm still left wondering how much this mod. affected a GT with the roof frame and the bolted in roof.

Which came first, the windshield reinforcement or the roof frame??? As in with most racing things are addressed and modified as the car is raced and as needed.

It is my understanding that the roof was bolted in not for adding any stiffness to the car, but, rather as a response to the roof unlatching and flying off at speed on tracks like the Nurburgring.

So, do they first start with the windshield frame to stop the flexing, and when that doesn't work they finally bolt the roof to the car?

I don't know where the Daytona car fits in the progression of development of the GT, but, I am pretty certain that it does NOT have the roof bolted in. As for the windshield frame reinforcement I can't answer to that. Maybe someone can chime in.

The Sonauto car had the roof bolted in.
It has the windshield frame black padding pieces so I could not see if the frame was reinforced.

I would add that the steel fiberglassed into the roof was probably intended to add some strength. Meaney said that the windshields cracked on the car at Daytona, that is why there was so much tape on them.

I have been looking at pictures of the windshield frame with the reinforcements and it doesn't seem like the trim can be put back on after that modification.

Most of these modifications were done with VERY crude welds...aesthetics weren't their main concern.
