Hi All,
I got the COA from Porsche for my 914-6. The engine number they list is different than the number that came with my car.
I got the car from the original owner and he says the motor was never changed. Unfortunatly the dealer never listed the motor number in the maintainance book.
Any way Porsche USA says all they can do is list what is shown based on the VIN #. I asked if they could trace from the Engine number and they said yes, but would not do it because it is only on the original Microfiche and they would not spend the time looking. They also said they have seen many incorrect listing for these cars.
So, does anybody have any contacts at the Porsche factory that might be able to look-up the engine numbers and see what VINs they go with?
Maybe there was a swap before delivery or just a mis-numbering. If I could find the car with my engine number it might be a clue to what happened.
My vin is 9140432229 my engine is 6405736. Porsche lists the motor as 6405419.
Any help would be appreciated.
Ken

I hate to say it, but it would appear that the COA should be correct:
9140432318 6405408
9140432167 6405423
9140432264 6405471
9140432142 6405479
9140432320 6405519
9140432382 6405571
9140432385 6405574
9140432493 6405656
9140432597 6405731
Now unless the engine they say was assigned to the car turned out to be faulty, and the replacement was not recorded it should be the early number. The fact that you have a very late number might indicate that the factory did install the later engine as a replacement, or may have supplied it to the distributor for replacement. I would consider that the engine was in the car when delivered. That is as original as it gets.
The engine in my 74 914 was an October 73 engine in a March 74 car, and was recorded in my Owners manual at delivery.

Glenn - What are the chances of getting the Engine Numbers from your registration site??
Ken
I own #2385.I got the orginal maintance book with the car,The engine #6405574 is recorded/written in.Then a embossing stamp over it,So it can not be changed has anyone seen that in the mat.book ?
Take Care,914
Ken,
I have no record of your 914/6 prior to your ownership.
I look at engine number 6405419 as the 1419th US engine built this means that approximately 64% of 914/6s were US version (up to that point), This fits well within the range I have 60%-68%
I have 2 entrys around the engine number Porsche gave you:
SerialNo--------EngineNo--%
9140432318----6405408---61
9140432167----6405423---65
I am disappointed in Porsche's new Atlanta staff, the last COA contact, Howard Adams would do a little research for you.
Now unless the engine they say was assigned to the car turned out to be faulty, and the replacement was not recorded it should be the early number. I think that what Dave wrote is plausible
...I got the original maintance book with the car,The engine #6405574 is recorded/written in.Then a embossing stamp over it...
I have not seen this before...but I have only seen 10 or so maintenance books before

Dave,
It's like that but over the engine Number there is a pressed in lined embossment,Like this /////////// it looks that the dealer did that so the engine
Number could not be changed. #2385 Came from Don Burns Porsche In Garden Grove CA.
