View Full Version : 1976 Project
A couple weeks ago some friends & I picked up this really nice '76. It had been in storage for years, moved from garage to garage in Chicago. Our plans are to finish painting the car and clean it up.
This car has the following options:
M404 - Front & rear sway bars
M571 - Fog lights
M572 - Two-tone horns
M652 - Intermittent windshield wipers
M102 - Rear window defroster
Here is the front trunk, this car has a thick layer of dust.
Battery tray has seen better days, this will be replaced and the engine compartment will be repainted
Here is the paint tag and a picture of the course textured vinyl on the roll bar
Yesterday we started to clean the car up. We pulled the gas tank to clean it out. This car has swaybars front and rear!
I pulled out the FI brain and took a look at the hellhole, not bad at all!
The engine looks like it needs a good cleaning and some new seal.

Glenn, what is the vin number on that 76 car. Always looking for more data on the 76 cars.
Here is a pic of my chassis tag which looks to be earlier chassis than yours.
my vin ends in 4063. 12/75 build date

Nice find! I only wish my project car looked that good. Looks like a little surface rust an no major problems.

007! haha thats cool. Still the chassis number is earlier than mine giving me more reason to think that Porsche stacked up the bodies and finished them as they could or had the chance.
I also parted out 4762900504 back in 1992, it was Gemini Blue with a black basketweave interior.

GlennMarks and I finally got back to working on the car today.
We pulled the engine today, it will need to be resealed.
We are pulling the engine to replace the battery tray and repaint as needed
Here is the drivers side, no perforations we found, just some surface rust.

Check with Tweeks. I think the battery tray is available and real cheap!
Nice find :)
At thursday I get my '71.
Its the same story....the last 10 years only moved from garage to garage

Update from engine removal:
We had to cut the engine bar because the thru bolts were rust welded in.
I have about 5 engine bars sitting around so no big deal.

Impressive! I've never come across those bolts rust welded together before.

I recall Jason, one of the Pelicans, using a 2x4 as a "mandrel", and pounding on the top of it with a small sledge hammer, to get the bolts to let go of the motor mount bar on his car once.

Here is the remains of the engine pad, it goes straight into the dumpster.
After inspecting the firewall no perforations where found!!
Today we got the power washer out and cleaned the engine compartment and the trunks.

Looking great Glenn! You're lucky you didn't have any perforations behind the engine firewall mat like my car has!
I did not like the glue on the wall so I stripped it, we are painting the rest of the anyway.
I cut most of the tray out and cleaned up the hell hole.
The underside still needs some cleaning.

Do you have a welder? If you need help welding it in, let me know.

Thanks, I will let you know!
yesterday I started to clean the interior parts, here is the passenger door panel it is saddle brown large basket weave material.
Today I finished removing the battery tray.
I forgot my camera so not pictures today
Here is the new battery tray
Here is the work I did last week, cut the battery tray out
Today GlennMarks & I sand the whole exterior with 400 grit
The primer was thin & not prepped well so we will decided to primer it again before paint.
I am preparing the Fuch 2.0L alloy wheels for paint
It has been more than 2 years since I have done anything on the car so I thought I would at least get the battery try welded in.
First primer the back side of the battery tray support.
I don't have a spot welder so I decided to drill holes and do rosette welds.
I used a torpedo level to get it in level.
next grind down the welds, then sand flat
then clean and paint with some etching primer.

Great job Glenn. The factory didn't do as nice of a job as you did.
