View Full Version : Tapiro 914
The Tapiro 914/6 was designed by Giorgetto Guigiaro's ItalDesign studio in 1970

I think this was a pretty cool looking car. The same company designed the Delorean later.

Supposedly, the car was in Mexico City at the behest of VWoA in the early 70s. They got word that someone was going to steal the car to build copies of it, so Pedro Rodriguez (I think) and another gentleman drove it all night and all day to get it back to the US.
The other gentleman currently works at a local (to me) Porsche dealership, and told me the story at this year's San Jose auto show.

Dave,
I just read an article (6/1979) that a high ranking Mexican official took a liking to the car so Porsche left it in Mexico

My guess is that PCNA (or whomever was in charge) heard the rumor about stealing the car somewhat later, which is when they decided to get it out of the country.

Tapiro after bomb
After bomb? There must be a story here somewhere?????
Sad looking mess.
"Following the show, the car was purchased by a wealthy Spanish industrialist who used the car as a daily driver until the car was literally blown up by terrorists protesting its owner’s labor policies. The rusted remains now call an Italian Museum home."

Very nice and interesting car!
Thank you all for the photos. There are a lot of them that I never seen before. And they are rather useful for me.
I'm making a 3d model of this car for the need for speed 5 porsche unleashed game right now.
Does anyone have photos of the cockpit? Something like 3d posted by Gustl in the 6th post here but with better resolution so that more details could be seen?
And any photos with the opened hood would be nice as well.
Some thoughts that I've got after studying photos:
It seems that the car was upgraded in 1970-71. Just between Turin and LA shows. Changed things that I found on photos are:
- new rims.
- new wipers working principle(wipers are symmetrical to each other on early photos, they are oriented in the opposite directions; on late photos - wipers are oriented in one direction - to the right).
If I got it right, there are a small plates/logos "tapiro" just behind front doors. But there are even shorter logos in front of the doors. Does anyone know what was on those logos?
Does anyone know what was the logos on the steering wheel?
Thanks in advance!

I found this using a google search

The later wheels are Minilites, the wiper can easily be shifted to rest on one side to the other. That is about all I can help with.

Thanks! Another new photo for me. And it's quite useful:)
How did you managed to find it? I tried searching with google and other search engines for many times but could not find a lot of photos which are posted here.

Probably you are right...
But there are two moments:
1. in the first case I described each wiper should go only half of the windshield or they will impact each other somewhere in the middle. But in second case they can go the whole windshield they only should have the same speed to prevent the impact.
2. It seems that all photos where the car is on early wheels have the first variant of wipers orientation. And the car on late wheels is strictly with second variant...
Maybe you would say that I am kind a paranoiac about modifications and changes to the car...
But I just noticed that Tapiro probably had different dashboards or instrumental panels it's better to say.
Most photos show "different leveled" cluster for three instruments(something like "_-_" if we will look at it from above).
But some rather rare photos seem to show something like wide instrumental panel where all instruments should be on the same plane, on "one level". It seems that the car on those photos is already sold or it is the time atleast after the shows where Tapiro was exhibited(Turin and LA). That's why such photos are rare.
Those photos are:
Gms last posted one, the one from 15th post and the second from 3d post.
What do you think about that?
here is another interior picture
I don't think the configuration in #20 was a working configuration, I think they loosened the arms and moved them off to opposite sides to make the windshield area look cleaner. I think the wipers should be parked to the left or to the right, as the factory wiper rack would work.
The center temperature controls (highlighted area) look like this
this picture shows the rear trunk area a little clearer

But photo in the #20 is not the only one with such wiper configuration. All of the photos of the car on early wheels that I saw show this configuration actually.
I am new here, my name is Majo alias cara. I am big fan of concept cars like Carabo, Stratos Zero, Spicup, Tapiro, Murene... and and. I collect model cars and images from concept cars. If you can help me with images let me know please. I search photos from older magazines about Bertone, Italdesign, Pininfarina....

Hello Cara!
Thanks for the photos!
What is on your second photo? A replica? It is not a real Tapiro for sure.

There isn't any logos on the car on this photo. The wipers are not like on other photos and they are misplaced here.

Like I say this car must be modified. I have found another image from tapiro and this car have not any logos too. I have this three photos on ebay found long time ago and there is this tapiro photo too. Its original photo.

It's actually a pretty decent story. I wrote two posts about it.
The first is the Porsche Tapiro by Giorgetto Giurigaro (http://993c4s.com/cars/porsche-prototypes/porsche-tapiro-by-giorgetto-giugiaro/)
The second is the source of the information quoted below in Porsche Tapiro. I Found It! (http://993c4s.com/cars/porsche-prototypes/what-happened-to-the-porsche-tapiro/)
"Following the show, the car was purchased by a wealthy Spanish industrialist who used the car as a daily driver until the car was literally blown up by terrorists protesting its owner’s labor policies. The rusted remains now call an Italian Museum home."
If I can answer any questions, I'm happy to try!! :-)

Cara
Don't know... I see two possibilities:
-the car is in its very early state, even unfinished. There is not some of the interior parts in it: central console cover, door panels, orange leather panels at a sides of seats. But I doubt that there has been any kind of photosession of unfinished car before it was unveiled to the public at Turin '70.
-this is not original Tapiro.
Two lower photos on your last picture show real Tapiro, it seems to me.
Anyways, thanks for sharing!
Do you have any other photos?

I have only magazine's cover and two pages with photos scans from here:
http://www.914club.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=58688
But resolution of the scans is not the best and the cover is corrupted a bit... So it's better to rescan if possible.
If there is any text about Tapiro and Goertz 914 in that article, it will be interesting to see it too.
