One of my german friends just sent me a concept drawing from the VW-Porsche 914 that's from December 1968. It was shown in a german society magazine (DER SPIEGEL, No.50/1968).

Thought it's interesting enaugh to share it here :)

Good early evidence. I've seen other early drawings, probably came after this. does anyone know what month of 68 or 69 the first scale model of the eventual design was fixed upon, and when the first drivable prototype was up and running? Just curious-- Chris Hager

I know that the very first drawings were from 1964 (!!)

In 1966 they started serious work on the "VW-Porsche-Project".
They made 5 different 1/5 clay models, the one from Heinrich Klie was the winning project. It was very similar to the final design. Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, who became the "leader" of the design center, reworked the design.

I don't know if the pics below show the 1st driveable prototype car and if it survived. Most prototype cars were destroyed after the production line started.
This photos were published in a german car magazine in February 1969

It the "tent on wheels":D

Thanks for sharing. I'd never seen that before. It's so ugly, now I don't know whether I'm glad I saw it or not!

That car is disguised! I was told a story about driving the car on a toll road in Germany during a time when BMW or Mercedes was also testing, and the toll attendant told the driver to pass through and they would charge it to their account (BMW or MB)!

This drawing which looks very much like the final product is dated May 3, 1968

Here are 3 pictures of a clay model, not sure when they were made.
