I have read many books about 914s and they seem to credit the car's design with numerous individuals, mostly designers outside of Porsche. I found this interview with Peter Porsche from 1970.

Question:
Was the initial concept of your father that the car would be a Volkswagen?

Answer:
No. We wanted to have a car which would be a sports car but would be cheaper than our 911.Young people like to drive fast and like sports cars and so we thought it would be a good idea with our engineering and the big factory behind us we could build this car. The overall concept is ours, the design is ours and from Volkswagen we got the engine. The man responsible for the design is my brother Ferdinand and the car ,was developed in about 2 1/2 years.

just to get the names in correct relations:

Peter Porsche - this should be Hans-Peter Porsche, 1940 - son of Ferry Porsche

Ferdinand - this should be Ferdinand Alexander Porsche (also known as "Butzi"), 1935 - son of Ferry Porsche

So, Butzi is now over 70! Hard to fathom.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but aside from Butzi's contribution to the 911 design, did he not have a significant part in the design of the 904? Or, was it 906?

Memory failing - too many years gone by.

he designed the Porsche 904 / Porsche Carrera GTS

I met him at a big Porsche meeting in Austria, back in May 2003

I posted this Q on the thread about an early (68) concept drawing of the 914: does anyone know when--mo and year--the first scale model of the final 914 design was set, and also what mo of '69 (presumably) the first full scale drivable prototype of the 914 was ready--I assume before fall 69 auto shows. How early? Did they keep that prototype, or destroy it by the time the production run began? -Chris Hager

All prototypes were destroyed except for the sporto six and the famous #4 car which still exists in a rusted out condition. The Sporto six is in good shape and for sale last I heard.
